Capabilities

Everything you can create from one set of sources

Open the Create panel, choose which sources to include and pick a format. Each output is built from your notebook, not from the open web.

Listen & watch

Audio Overview

A natural conversation about your sources between two or three AI voices. Choose the voices, the audience and the focus, then listen anywhere.

Video Overview

Narrated slides built from your sources. Each slide is checked against the material, timed to the narration and rendered as a video.

Interactive Explainer

Step through a visual explanation of a process, mechanism or algorithm, with a caption for every step.

Research Brief

A concise, cited overview of what your sources say, useful before an essay, meeting or decision.

Timeline

Events and developments from your sources placed in chronological order.

Data Table

Facts and figures pulled into a structured table you can scan and compare.

Compare papers

Papers side by side, with each point cited to the paper it came from.

Sources

Bring in the material you are actually studying

Every notebook starts with sources. Upload a file, add a website by its address, paste text such as lecture notes, or describe your topic and let Discover search the web for sources you can add with one click. Then choose which sources each question or output should use.

  • Upload PDFs and other documents
  • Add any public webpage by URL
  • Paste notes, excerpts or transcripts
  • Discover new sources on the web from a topic
  • Search and select the sources to include
Notebook Chat

Ask questions and see exactly where answers come from

Notebook Chat answers from the sources you have selected rather than from general knowledge. Every answer carries citations, and clicking one opens the cited passage so you can read it in context. Save useful answers to your notes, and set a notebook objective to steer everything the notebook creates.

  • Answers grounded in your selected sources
  • Citations open the cited passage
  • Ask about one source or all of them
  • Save answers straight to notes
  • A notebook objective guides every output
Audio Overview

Listen to your sources as a conversation

Audio Overview writes a script from your notebook and performs it with distinct voices. A host guides the conversation and a learner asks the questions you would ask. In three-voice mode, a third voice keeps the discussion anchored to the sources. Pick from nine voices, tell it who the overview is for and what to focus on, and generate.

  • Two or three voices with distinct roles
  • Alloy, Ash, Coral, Echo, Fable, Nova, Onyx, Sage or Shimmer
  • Set the audience, objective and length
  • Swap voices without rewriting the script
Video Overview

Turn a notebook into a narrated video

Video Overview builds a slide deck from your sources, checks each slide against the material, records narration and renders a video with every slide timed to the voice. Use it to revise, to introduce a topic to a class or team, or to get the big picture before you dig into the detail.

  • Slides checked against your sources
  • Narration timed slide by slide
  • Rendered as a video you can play or download
How it works

From first step to finished work.

  1. 1

    Create a notebook

Give it a name and add sources: files, websites, pasted text or sources discovered on the web.

  2. 2

    Ask and explore

Use Notebook Chat to ask questions, follow citations back to the source and save what matters to notes.

  3. 3

    Create study material

Choose an output such as an Audio Overview, quiz or mind map, pick the sources to include and generate.

  4. 4

    Come back any time

Outputs stay in the notebook, so you can listen again, retake a quiz or add new sources as you learn.

Who it is for

Made for the way you work.

Students

Revise from your own lecture slides and readings with quizzes, flashcards and Audio Overviews you can play on the go.

Researchers

Keep a literature set in one place, compare papers and build cited briefs as your thinking develops.

Teachers

Turn a reading list into study guides, quizzes and narrated videos that help a class get started.

Teams

Bring everyone up to speed on a project's documents with a brief, a mind map or an overview.

Good to know

Use it with confidence.

Notebook outputs are built from the sources in the notebook, so they are only as complete as those sources. Citations make it quick to check a claim against the original; do that for anything important. Some publishers block automatic reading of their pages: if a website will not load, open it and use Paste text instead. Larger outputs such as Audio and Video Overviews take a few minutes and may use credits.

Common questions

What is an AI notebook?
An AI notebook is a workspace built around sources you choose. Instead of answering from general knowledge, it answers from your documents, websites and notes, cites them, and turns them into study material such as quizzes, flashcards and audio overviews.
What sources can I add to a notebook?
You can upload files such as PDFs, add a webpage by URL, paste text, or use Discover to search the web for sources on a topic and add the ones you want.
Can I make quizzes and flashcards from a PDF?
Yes. Add the PDF to a notebook, open Create and choose Quiz or Flashcards. They are generated from that PDF and any other sources you select.
What is an Audio Overview?
An Audio Overview is a spoken conversation about your sources between two or three AI voices: a host, a learner and, optionally, a voice that keeps the discussion grounded in the material. You can choose the voices, the audience and the focus.
How is Artifacts Notebook different from NotebookLM?
